Introduction / History

The Geungeu actively preserve their distinct ethnic identity in Laos. This small group numbers about 500 people and lives mainly in remote southern regions. They speak Western Katu, a language in the Mon-Khmer family, and share close cultural links with other Katuic peoples.

Geungeu ancestors migrated to Southeast Asia during ancient Austroasiatic movements from southern China and southeastern regions. They settled in Laos' mountainous areas centuries before Tai-Lao groups arrived. The Geungeu continue to uphold oral traditions and customs that reflect their enduring heritage as indigenous highland dwellers.

Geungeu communities thrive in villages on mountain slopes, often in areas like the Bolaven Plateau or Annam Mountains.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Families engage in swidden agriculture, clearing land to grow upland rice, vegetables, and cotton. They hunt, gather forest products, and raise livestock to sustain themselves. Women skillfully weave textiles using traditional methods. Villages consist of stilt houses built from natural materials, fostering close-knit community life.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Geungeu actively follow traditional ethnic religions rooted in animism. They recognize spirits in all things—plants, animals, rivers, mountains, and objects. Villagers conduct rituals and offer sacrifices, including animals, to honor these spirits and seek blessings for health, harvests, and protection. Ancestor spirits also receive veneration through ceremonies that strengthen community bonds.

What Are Their Needs?

The Geungeu face isolation in remote areas, restricting access to education, healthcare, and modern infrastructure. They depend on subsistence farming, leaving them vulnerable to environmental changes and economic shifts. Spiritually, the group remains largely unreached, with very few Christians; they need culturally sensitive outreach and for the rest of Scripture translated into their language.
